Not A Son is an installation of wall mounted ceramic skateboard decks that visually recites my personal pleasures and adversities of being a butch lesbian. As Jeanne Cordova proclaims in “Butches, Lies, and Feminism” (Published within the work “The Persistent Desire: A Femme-Butch Reader”), “Being a butch has been the most troublesome and most delicious experience of my life”.
Handbuilding and underglazing all components of this work allowed me to connect the duality of my identity and experiences. The tenderness and intention of recognizing each indention I make on the clay accompanied by the bold graphic designs derived from personal anecdotes attest to my troubles and delights.
Seven 22 ½ x 6 ¼ x 4 in decks that are displayed vertically and evenly spaced one foot apart
